Chris Nicholls graduated from the University of Liverpool with a degree in History and Social Theory and then the University of the West of England in Bristol with a Postgraduate Certificate in Post-16 Education. Previously, he taught history, sociology and business studies at Gloucestershire College before moving to London to teach history. Dan Luly is the Preparation Course Coordinator and also teaches a range of English language abilities. Joanne Potter is the Head of the Business and IT faculty and in her role she focuses on empowering students to learn. Liz Clarke has worked in international education for over 15 years in a variety of countries including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Italy and Portugal. Mark Howe earned a Postgraduate Certificate of Innovation in Education from Warwick University, a Postgraduate Certificate of Education for Secondary History from the University of West England and a Bachelor’s Degree (Honors) in History from King Alfred’s College. Mike Brewer graduated from Canterbury Christ Church University with a Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) in English and Religious Studies. He then moved on to the University of Chichester to complete a PGCE in Secondary Education. More recently, he graduated from the University of Kent with a Master’s Degree in English and American Literature. Mike joined the EF Academy team because it represents an exciting educational opportunity that plays to his two great professional passions: pastoral care, especially in boarding, and international education. As a guidance counselor, Neil Abbott cares for and supports students and is available to answer any of their study-related questions. Caring for the students can also involve anything from accompanying them to the doctors for an appointment, opening a bank account and resolving host family issues. Pauline Zhang was born and raised in Xi’an, China and graduated from Nanjing Agriculture University. She has been working with EF for four years - three years with EF students and one year with EF Academy. Before that she was an ESL teacher and recruiter for several years. Rachel Ripley's main focus is the welfare needs of the students. Her role is varied and ranges in supporting students with accommodation issues, homesickness and academic worries. Rachel has a vast amount of experience working with young people, and has carried out this kind of work in a variety of different settings. At our international secondary school in Torbay, we educate and empower students based on the philosophy that students succeed when they feel cared for.
We are dedicated to ensuring students at EF Academy Torbay feel comfortable and supported by teachers, guidance counselors, house parents and host families at every stage of their high school education – particularly between the IGCSE and IB or A-Level program and throughout the university application process. Most students apply to universities in the UK, but our experienced university guidance counselor also supports students who wish to send their applications to schools in the U.S. and their home countries. This personalized university guidance process involves arranging college visits and working with students on a one-on-one basis to determine what programs they should apply to.
University applications are made early in the final year of A-Level or IB studies and offers are usually received by early Spring. The Director of University Guidance at Torbay helps students to plan their university applications and decide which offers to accept. Support is also available when the results are received during the summer so that our student achieve the best possible university placement.
We have selected the best housing options for students at our boarding school in Torbay. Whether you choose to live with a host family or in the student residence, you will have quiet places to study and a comfortable place you can call home.
Students who speak different languages live together in a shared room with a bed, desk, chair and storage for clothing for each resident.
Students living with a local host family have the opportunity to engage and immerse themselves in a comfortable home environment; students can choose from a single or shared room.
EF Academy’s international school in Torbay has an off-campus residence consisting of two buildingswhich is located just a 15-minute walk from the school. Students eat breakfast and dinner in the residence building before and after school and can buy lunch from the school dining hall on campus. House parents live with the students, ensuring they are safe and that they are in their rooms by curfew, and house tutors support them with homework in the evenings and on weekends. They also oversee the supervised study hall sessions, which take place in the residence. A full-time nurse employed by the school is on duty daily.
Host family students live with local families and are immersed in traditional British culture and enjoy a comfortable home environment. Whether they live in the residence or with a host family, students have access to quiet study areas at the school (and lounges in the dormitory) where they meet with their classmates (and roommates) to study and hang out.
EF Academy Torbay is located in the South West of England on the south coast of Devon which lends itself to a variety of activities that take place on or near the water such as sailing and coasteering. Thanks to partnerships with local business, our boarding school students enjoy free or reduced entry or discounts to Torbay’s gym, pool, climbing center, restaurants and cafes.
