  • Chris Nicholls

    Chris Nicholls graduated from the University of Liverpool with a degree in History and Social Theory and then the University of the West of England in Bristol with a Postgraduate Certificate in Post-16 Education. Previously, he taught history, sociology and business studies at Gloucestershire College before moving to London to teach history. Chris is also qualified to teach English as a Foreign Language and spent a year teaching English in Japan.

  • Dan Luly

    Dan Luly is the Preparation Course Coordinator and also teaches a range of English language abilities. Dan has worked in English language education for more than 12 years in the UK, Italy, Spain and Thailand. As the Prep Course Coordinator, he is responsible for overseeing the students’ linguistic development and ensuring that they have been provided with all the tools necessary to access an academic curriculum on their next course.

  • Debbie Chatterton

    As the Director of University Guidance, Debbie Chatterton develops, implements and assesses a comprehensive guidance program designed to increase the overall development of students’ academic, social, and environmental strengths. She is responsible for supervising and leading the school's university guidance department in assessing the needs of the student population by collaborating with parents and faculty staff.

  • Gundel Bonfield

    Gundel Bonfield has been teaching art and German for a long time and in many different kinds of schools and colleges around England. She was the Head of Art in a school in Surrey for eight years. Originally, Gundel is from Germany, so she understands how challenging and rewarding it is to live and learn in another country.

  • Ian Mills

    Ian Mills is an Environmental Management and Resource Development graduate from University of Wales with a passion and active interest in coastal geography. As the CAS Coordinator, Ian is responsible for guiding students through an enriching experience in Creativity, Action and Service outside their academic programs. He draws on his experience in outdoor education and community aid work in the UK and Nepal.

  • Joanne Potter

    Joanne Potter is the Head of the Business and IT faculty and in her role she focuses on empowering students to learn. She is a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher with over ten years of experience teaching in schools, further education colleges and higher education. Joanne takes a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, using innovative teaching techniques and resources designed to encourage participation.

  • Jo Innes

    Jo Innes has an Honors Degree in Linguistics and a teaching diploma. She has taught at international schools in South Africa and the UK, and worked as an assistant examiner for Cambridge International Examinations and the IB Organization. She has experience as part of the residential staff in three boarding schools, and has been on the senior leadership team, responsible for academics, in two previous schools.

  • Liz Clarke

    Liz Clarke has worked in international education for over 15 years in a variety of countries including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Italy and Portugal. In the UK she has worked in international and further education schools. In addition to her Bachelor’s Degrees in Literature and History, she has a Cambridge Diploma in English Language Teaching.

  • Mandy Meek

    Mandy Meek graduated from Exeter University with a degree in Mathematics and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. Mandy has taught a range of mathematics qualifications in both secondary and further education, and she earned a diploma in management from the Chartered Management Institute while overseeing a large team of academic staff.

  • Mark Howe

    Mark Howe earned a Postgraduate Certificate of Innovation in Education from Warwick University, a Postgraduate Certificate of Education for Secondary History from the University of West England and a Bachelor’s Degree (Honors) in History from King Alfred’s College. Before accepting the position of Head of School at EF Academy Torbay, Mr. Howe worked at the British School of Guangzhou in China.

  • Mark Brewer, Deputy Head of Pastoral Care at Torbay

    Mike Brewer graduated from Canterbury Christ Church University with a Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) in English and Religious Studies. He then moved on to the University of Chichester to complete a PGCE in Secondary Education. More recently, he graduated from the University of Kent with a Master’s Degree in English and American Literature. Mike joined the EF Academy team because it represents an exciting educational opportunity that plays to his two great professional passions: pastoral care, especially in boarding, and international education. For the past ten years, he has worked at St. Edmund’s School - Canterbury where he was the Head of Boarding, responsible for a large and diverse international boarding community.

  • Neil Abbott

    As a guidance counselor, Neil Abbott cares for and supports students and is available to answer any of their study-related questions. Caring for the students can also involve anything from accompanying them to the doctors for an appointment, opening a bank account and resolving host family issues. Neil comes to this role from an unusual and unorthodox path, having been a pastor of a Baptist Church both in France and the UK.

  • Pauline Zhang

    Pauline Zhang was born and raised in Xi’an, China and graduated from Nanjing Agriculture University. She has been working with EF for four years - three years with EF students and one year with EF Academy. Before that she was an ESL teacher and recruiter for several years. As a guidance counselor, Pauline's job is to make sure students are safe and happy in Torbay.

  • Rachel Ripley

    Rachel Ripley's main focus is the welfare needs of the students. Her role is varied and ranges in supporting students with accommodation issues, homesickness and academic worries. Rachel has a vast amount of experience working with young people, and has carried out this kind of work in a variety of different settings. She has a degree in Youth Work, and has extensive knowledge in safeguarding, and specific youth-related issues.

  • Tina Desmond

    Tina Desmond graduated from Plymouth University with an LLB law degree in 2007. She completed her Postgraduate Certificate in Education in the lifelong learning sector in June 2009. Her professional career also includes teaching employment law and English business law at City College Plymouth.

  • Tricia Aquith

    Tricia Asquith has held a variety of roles within schools across southwest England. As the IGCSE Coordinator, she encourages students to fulfill their potential inside and outside of the classroom and is always willing to help them succeed. She has enjoyed teaching in both the mathematics and science curriculum areas.

  • Wendy Daniels

    Wendy Daniels has been a science teacher for nearly 20 years. Most of her experience has been in a range of secondary schools and colleges across the southwest where she has previously been a Head of Biology and Head of Science. She has worked as an exam officer and a PGCE student mentor. She is also a moderator and assistant examiner for A-Level biology.
