Adverb som uttrycker en synpunkt eller kommenterar på engelska

Det finns vissa adverb och adverbiala uttryck som berättar för oss vilken synpunkt, eller åsikt, talaren har om ett agerande, eller som kommenterar detta agerande. Dessa adverb skiljer sig från övriga adverb i det att de inte talar om för oss hur agerandet ägde rum. Kommenterande och synpunktsadverb, modifierar hela satser snarare än enstaka verb, adverb, eller adjektiv. Det finns ingen verklig uppdelning mellan kommenterande adverb och adverb som beskriver en synpunkt, utom vad gäller deras placering i meningen. Många adverb som kan användas som synpunkts-adverb, kan också användas som kommenterande adverb. Men i vissa fall, förekommer ett visst adverb mycket oftare som det ena än som det det andra.

Placering inom meningen

Synpunktsadverb placeras oftare i början, än i slutet av meningen. De separeras vanligtvis från resten av meningen genom ett kommatecken. Kommenterande adverb placeras innan huvudverbet, utom i de fall där verbet "to be" används. I detta fall kan adverbet placeras antingen före eller efter verbet. I vissa fall kommer även kommenterande adverb, som placeras före huvudverbet, att separeras från resten av meningen av kommatecken. Men det är ovanligt. I exemplen nedan visas synpunkts- och kommenterande adverb, på sina korrekta placeringar. När placeringen inom meningen är ovanlig, konstlad, eller för formell för talspråk, markeras detta med en asterisk.
