Verb som följs av infinitiv

Många olika verb följs av, eller kan följas av, ett andra verb i infinitivorm. Alla de verb som listas på den här sidan följs av to-infinitiv när infinitiv används. De verb som är markerade med en asterisk kan även följas av en that-sats, vilket visas i exemplen. Verb som är markerade med två asterisker kan bara följas av en that-sats när huvudverbets subjekt är "it".

Verb utan substantiv innan en that-sats

När vissa verb följs av en that-sats, förekommer inget substantiv innan that-satsen, trots att det finns ett substantiv innan infinitivformen. Detta är fallet gällande verben command, direct, entreat, implore, order, require, & trust.

Exempel

I trust you to tell the truth.
I trust that you are telling the truth.
The general commanded his men to surrender.
The general commanded that his men surrender.

Verb med substantiv innan en that-sats

Andra verb, kräver ett substantiv innan that-satsen, när de följs av en that-sats, precis som innan infinitivformen. Detta är fallet gällande verben persuade & remind.

Exempel

You can't persuade people to buy small cars.
You can't persuade people that small cars are better.
He reminded me to take my notebook to school.
He reminded me that I would need my notebook.

Verb där det är valfritt att sätta ett substantiv innan that-satsen

En sista grupp verb, kan ha ett fakultativt substantiv innan that-satsen, när de följs av en that-sats. Detta är fallet för verben instruct, teach, & warn.

Exempel

She taught her students to appreciate poetry.
She taught her students that poetry was valuable.
She taught that poetry was valuable.

Verb som följs av infinitiv eller av ett substantiv + infinitiv

Att använda "to dare"

I nekande och frågande meningar är det möjligt att använda infinitivformen med eller utan "to", så länge som de bägge verbens subjekt är det samma, även om det är mer vanligt förekommande att utesluta "to". Om de två verben har olika subjekt, måste "to" inkluderas.
